Zoo Med Laboratories
Is this light bulb good for my bearded dragon?
I’m considering purchasing a Zoo Med PowerSun UVB 100 Watt bulb since it includes everything in one bulb. I’m currently using a Zoo Med Laboratories SZMFSC10 Compact Flourescent Bulb. Which one is better?
I prefer zoo med power sun! It is a mercury vapor bulb and put’s out uv lighting and heat,so while your reptile is basking it is also getting uv,this also saves money on the electric bill ,being you have one bulb plugged in instead of two. Power sun’s are recommend by mostly all long time keepers or owners, the reason more people do not use them is because it is $50 a bulb and that bulb last you for 6months. But the $50 dollars is worth it.When using the power sun make sure that you get a deep dome fixture rated for the wattage of the bulb or better. The deep dome fixture is a must because these bulbs get extremely hot and can burn if exposed, now a lot of people buy the bulb and it blows out because they put a 100watt bulb in a light fixture rated for 75watts so the bulb blows out or they put it in too small of a fixture and when the bulb feels to be to hot it will shut off .Now do not get me wrong a separate basking spot with a florescent light would work equally well but i prefer Mercury vapor bulbs! Compact bulbs are horrible they put out little to no uvb at all and have been linked to causing eye pain and damage to the eyes known as resulting in something known as photo-kerato-conjunctivitis. I recommend you use either a repti sun florescent 10.0 , Power sun,Megaray mvb bulb or t-rex’s active uv heat,. Also stay away from Repti Glo 10.0.
