Watch Out For Harmful Mulch When Mulching Your Plant Life

The increasingly-used process of mulching offers valuable benefits to both soil and plants, and is something that is advised. There’s one issue, though, at least in certain parts of the country. This is because in these places a waste product produced by sawmills, hardwood bark, is shredded and used to make a mulch which has become commonly used. The sawmills had difficulties disposing of the waste bark which resulted from the practice of denuding the logs before sawing them.

Using the bark to make mulch was a handy solution for the lumber yards, but it’s not perfect. As a space-saving measure, the bark is heaped into piles, which can get very high in winter when demand is low. The front end loaders drive up on the piles compressing the pile, and this compacts the mulch too tightly, which can end up causing a big problem for your garden. The debarked mulch needs time to decompose, and it also needs oxygen and air flow in the pile. When it is too compacted there is no air flow, causing the mulch to become extremely hot as it decomposes, even to the point of bursting into flames.

The mulch can become toxic as a result of the build-up of the hot gases which cannot escape. Digging into the mulch and spreading it releases a terrible stink and also poses a danger to your plants. The gas that is contained in the mulch can be released, and if this happens the plants will be burned. Spreading this stuff around your plants could cause them to go brown in as little as few minutes. The grass could be turned brown by dumping a pile of this kind of mulch on the lawn. The hard part, you may not be able to tell good mulch from bad until the damage has already been done.

The bad mulch has a strong odor once you get down to it in the pile, but so does the good mulch, and the smell is different, but you may not be able to tell the difference. A darker color could also point to the mulch being bad, and if you want to be safe then you could check it by surrounding a sacrificial plant with some of the mulch. Take mulch from deeper inside the pile for this purpose, not from the outside. If nothing has happened to the plants for more than 24 hours, the mulch should be fine.

Although it’s not the end of the world, this kind of problem is rather prevented than experienced. Going to the trouble of mulching and then learning that it had damaged your plants may just make you a little unhappy. Now that you’ve been warned about bad mulch, you can still get all the benefits without the pain by getting your mulch from a source that  can assure  you they  have  taken the  correct  measures  to  avoid  it.
