Pet Products Forti

Is the Pet Products: Mouse/Rat Food Premium Pet Mouse & Rat Food from Wal-Mart good for my rat?

I have two pet rats and i have been feeding them the KAYTEE forti-diet and its basically just getting to expensive. Does the food from Wal-Mart have the same nutrients or is it just a filler for the rats?

Kaytee is a terrible brand. Just the fact that the food is made for both rats AND mice tells you how little they care about an animal’s health. Rats and mice require completely different dietary needs, so no food should be able to suit both. You want a healthy lab block, like Oxbow Regal Rat or Harlan Teklad. Something low in protein (12-18%) and no corn listed in the top 3 ingredients.

If those brands aren’t available, I’d even suggest a quality dog food over Kaytee or other pet store/walmart rat foods. Nutro Natural Choice Lite dog food is more suitable for your rats. I feed this to my girls.

Remember that this should only be part of your rats diet. Your rat also needs whole grains every day, veggies 4-5 times a week, and the odd (1-2 times a week) piece of fruit and meat.
