Ring Snaffle

Will a loose ring snaffle really pinch my horses mouth?
I was just reading another posting, and it says a loose ring snaffle can pinch a horses mouth! I just bought this type of bit for my green horse, knowing a snaffle would be gentler, but now I’m concerned! Anyone have any experience with this?
The mouthpiece should be at least 1/4 inch wider than your horse’s mouth, and up to 1/2 inch wider. If you ever see signs of pinching on your horse’s tissue, you need bit guards, but be sure your bit is wide enough to accommodate their width and still leave a 1/4 inch space of mouthpiece for play. A loose ring snaffle is a very good choice for your green horse, since the loose rings allow for a bit of a signal for your horse to respond to before the reins engage the forces on the mouth tissues. That is the point of using a loose ring snaffle when starting a horse on the bit. So I would not give up on using the loose ring bit because of the risk of pinching, but instead use the bit guards if you need them.
