How do I get my horses mane and tail to grow?

I’m trying to get my horses mane and tail to grow. I have heard flax seed is good? Can i just buy the flax seed oil at my local grocery store? Do i just put in his grain? How much? If you have any other ideas of suggestions please let me know thank you.

The only way to influence hair growth is through nutrition. Feed the best quality hay, supplement with high quality grains/pellets, and perhaps supplement with oil, copper and zinc. If you find a product that also has oil in it, then hazzaahh, you are golden (or bay, or chestnut,etc)

One of the products suggested by the Horse Journal was Farrier’s Formula Double Strength. http://www.statelinetack.com/item/life-data-farriers-formula-double-strength/E000484/ I have used it for years, and can really see good results both in hoof and haircoat of my horses.

Some of the difference is also genetics. My Andalusian boys have wonderful long manes and grow them at about an inch a month. I have to ‘do’ bridle paths every two weeks with those boys. My horses that are genetically less gifted with hair genes grow much more slowly, even though everybody is fed the wonderful Farrier’s Formula.
