Making Fashion Statement On Horseback With A Portuguese Riding Apparel

Horse back riding may seem a casual leisure sport for its novelty offered as a side amenity in many rural tourist places.  But as anyone who loves the equestrian sport, you need to be properly attired in the tradition of European gentry engaging in it. 

Riding horses is a fashion statement in itself and if you want you strut about parading your high-priced thoroughbred, whether in the rural streets or in an equestrian sporting event, it won’t hurt to look right and suited for the occasion.

Some of the most popular riding fashion attire are Portuguese riding apparel that has come down to the modern rider from centuries of horseback riding tradition from the Iberian country.

No, nothing fancy, just the usual long sleeved shirts for both sexes, tees and tanks and a brimmed hat to get you protected from the sun. The landed aristocrats and royalties might prefer a campera or pasameneria jacket that look like tghose jackets worn by matadors as well as caireless or calzona pair of pants with cuffs and the botos/botines or riding boots.

Alternatively, for the ladies, you can have the traditional Zahones with matching Polainas as well as chaps that can come with ornate designs or simpler ones. Then there’s the more modern ankle length split riding skirt that looks like a skirt but is actually a loose pair of pants.

The focus in Portuguese riding apparel, or any horseback riding wear, is concerned not so much with how the rider looks but more on the ride comfort as well as the horse’s well-being which is taken cared of with the right saddle and bridles.  For the rider, because there’s more stress on the buttocks, thigh and inner sides of the legs, the right pants are specially designed to withstand the rigors of horse back riding. 

It is not uncommon to see riders wear breeches with leather boots that are nearly knee length tucking in the breeches. 
There are chaps for men and women that do a similar job.  The traditional Portuguese riding attire uses olive leaf chaps which are indigenous products from a country steeped in equestrian traditions.  They are made of leather and styled like olive leaves with a buttoning lapel design that lets the users wrap the chaps around their legs and upper shoes from the ankle to the knees to give better support to lover leg muscles during the ride. These chaps have become standard riding accessory in almost all the countries with equestrian traditions.
