HP LaserJet 4000tn – Network Printer with Dual 250 Sheet Trays
As an interesting variation on HP’s LaserJet 4000n networking monochrome laser printer model, the HP LaserJet 4000tn comes not with merely an additional paper tray, but with two 250 sheet trays instead of a single 500 sheet tray. Though this may appear to be a lateral adjustment to the model’s hardware, the partitioning off of the paper storage allows for a more versatile machine when dealing with multiple export sizes and paper types.
Most commonly, letter and legal sized paper would be the two paper types selected for usage, and thanks to included HP software, automatic switching from type to type makes varying output length easier than ever. Variations in paper color and weight are also an option, as well as usage of certain special media types, though those with simpler, more consistent print demands would most likely prefer to stick with the HP LaserJet 4000n model with a single, 500 sheet tray.
In addition to the HP LaserJet 4000tn’s standard paper options, all models in the HP LaserJet 4000 series come equipped stock with a 100 sheet multipurpose feeder which can be used for media types such as up to 75 envelopes at a time, transparencies, and custom letterhead, as well as for additional letter and legal sized storage. If still more room is needed for paper, a single 500 sheet additional tray can be added to the device for a total potential paper storage capacity of 1100 sheets.
Print speeds run at a decent level with the HP LaserJet 4000tn, which can put out an advertised 17 pages per minute onto letter sized paper, and up to 16 pages per minute for legal sized. HP also includes their Instant On technology which allows for a warm up time of zero, and a first page out time of 12 seconds. While this discontinued model still doesn’t quite compete with today’s ultra fast work horses available now, it still operates at speeds well enough to keep the unit relevant for some years to come.
With the help of a 100 MHz RISC processor, slowdown due to heavy workloads should be limited and, as the HP LaserJet 4000tn is a network model, it also includes a slight boost in on board memory up to 8 MBs over the core model’s 4 MBs. Additional DIMM slots are included internally within the device for additional memory upgrades up to a maximum of 100 MBs.
Options of HP’s FastRes 1200 for quick, high resolution printing and HP ProRes 1200 for maximum print quality are both selectable, as well as draft quality modes and toner save modes. For further expandability options, an external duplexor can be added on additionally for automatic double sided printing.
With automatic two sided printing, the HP LaserJet 4000tn can not only reduce paper costs by as much as half, but produce professional looking documents with a high quality feel, as well as creative single page brochures and fliers, further rounding out the device as a valuable, and versatile, all around office printer.
